  • Share You may not have thought of trees and understory within the broader ambit of environmental education and nature-based experiences - but, it would be great to bring these aspects into some of the ongoing planting in Lake Mac. I moved to Valentine in July 2020 and I would love to see in valentine a copse of trees and understory that invites nature-based experiences for children. To enhance our environment with more trees and understory and at the same time help educate people on the benefits of ecosystems and diversity of habitats and all the unique things that are important for us to take in about environment. I thought Allambee Park would be an ideal location or on the land between the two sides of Allambee Place. As an environmental educator and retired teacher I think things like this with creative, explanatory markers would be brilliant for us here in Valentine and other areas in Lake Mac council area. I had been living up near Murwillumbah and Tweed Council did a great job with work and planting in Knox Park that embraced nature-based learning. on Facebook Share You may not have thought of trees and understory within the broader ambit of environmental education and nature-based experiences - but, it would be great to bring these aspects into some of the ongoing planting in Lake Mac. Thank you for your feedback

Nature-based learning in urban areas is a great idea and is currently under consideration as an issue for further exploration as a part of the Strategy. Your suggestion of a potential location has been passed on to the Project Team for further review.

    Thank you for your question.

The project team have advised you can ring council on 4921 0333 and request a street tree. The Customer Service Centre will lodge a ticket and arrange a staff member to inspect and assess the site. If the location is deemed suitable, consent will be given for the applicant to plant a tree in that location.

Upgrades to the website is planned for later in the year to allow people to submit street tree requests online.

Thank you for your interest in the project.

Unfortunately, there is currently no specific provision in council’s budget to have dead trees replaced in parks. That’s why we are developing this Strategy, so issues like this can be addressed in the future. If you’d like to speak to someone in more detail about this, please contact project lead, Peter Nichols.

We also encourage you to take our survey and social pinpoint map if you haven’t already.

    Thanks for your message

Carparks like this lack shade trees is because in general, there has been no previous focus on trees or tree canopy in urban areas. Maximising the number of carparks and traffic flow have been the main factors under consideration during design and construction. The end result is few trees in carparks.

The Strategy will look at outlining positive targets for greening, including incentives for building new (or potentially retrofitting) carparks on public and private land. If you have any further questions, please let us know.
