Consultation has concluded

Council has been advised that the NSW Government’s Geographical Names Board (GNB) is placing the renaming proposals for Coon Island to Pirrita Island and Coon Island Point to Miners Point on public exhibition from 18 October until 17 November 2021. Submissions relating to the proposal be directed to the GNB proposals page: https://proposals.gnb.nsw.gov.au/currentproposals. Ultimately, the decision rests with the NSW Government’s Geographical Names Board (GNB).

At its meeting on 26 July 2021, Council noted the stakeholder and community feedback on the naming of Coon Island and Coon Island Point. Council also agreed to submit a Place Name Proposal to the Geographical Names Board to rename Coon Island to Pirrita Island and rename Coon Island Point to Miners Point.

Council is planning to undertake improvement works around Coon Island and Coon Island Point in 2021-2022. As we plan for these improvements it is appropriate that we also consider community sentiment around the name given it is considered offensive by parts of our community.
