Consultation has concluded
The NSW Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government has approved the names Pirrita Island and Miners Point, following the Geographical Names Board (GNB) placing the renaming proposals for Coon Island to Pirrita Island and Coon Island Point to Miners Point on public exhibition in late 2021.
GNB published a gazette notice under the Geographical Names Act 1996 advising of the new place names, and at the same time, the name Coon Island and Coon Island Point was discontinued by way of another gazette: Government Gazette No 217 of Friday 20 May 2022 (nsw.gov.au).

Council staff held meetings with Bahtabah Local Aboriginal Land Council, Miromaa Aboriginal Language and Technology Centre, members of the Heaney family, Awabakal Descendants Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Awabakal Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, the NSW Geographical Names Board and other community groups and stakeholders.

On 26 July, Council noted the stakeholder and community feedback on the naming of Coon Island and Coon Island Point. Council also agreed to submit a Place Name Proposal to the Geographical Names Board to rename Coon Island to Pirrita Island and rename Coon Island Point to Miners Point.
