Lake Macquarie City Council is encouraging residents of Dora Creek to assist with the development of a Community Safety Plan that will help residents be informed, prepared, safe and resilient during severe weather and natural disasters. Council, in partnership with the Dora Creek Progress Association and the Dora Creek Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, hosted a community workshop on Thursday 27 August at Dora Creek Community Hall.

Residents heard from Council staff, the SES and Manly Hydraulics Laboratory, and had the opportunity to provide input into the Community Safety Plan.

Residents who were unable to attend the workshop are encouraged to access presentations and share valuable information by visiting Council’s Have Your Say site, to help develop a practical Safety Plan for the Dora Creek community.

Community volunteers have been recognised at the 2015 NSW Resilient Australia Awards, with a ‘highly commended’ award for their efforts in assisting residents of Dora Creek to manage the impacts of natural disasters.

The Dora Creek Progress Association and Dora Creek Sustainable Neighbourhood Group are working with Lake Macquarie City Council and the State Emergency Service to develop a Community Safety Plan for their community.

Council’s Manager Sustainability, Alice Howe, said safety planning at a local level requires the involvement of the people who live and work in a particular community, as they understand how their community functions.

“Council is helping people to prepare and manage threats from the environment, such as storms and floods, by facilitating opportunities for people to enhance their own safety and the safety of their neighbours,” Dr Howe said.

“The Community Safety Plan will help residents be informed, prepared, safe and resilient during severe weather and natural disasters.”

During a ceremony at NSW Parliament House, Minister for Emergency Services, David Elliott, presented Mark Mannile, of the Dora Creek Progress Association and Laurene Mulcahy, of the Dora Creek Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, with the award.

The NSW Resilient Australia Awards highlight the achievements of community groups, emergency services, state and local government and education providers in making NSW communities more resilient and better equipped when faced with emergencies.
