Let's talk: Understanding the science of climate change with Dr Dennys Angove

When: Wednesday 10 October, 1-2.30pm

Where: The Swansea Centre, 228 Pacific Highway, Swansea

Join Dr Dennys Angove for an afternoon to explore the science of climate change.

Topics presented will include the structure of the atmosphere, the natural greenhouse effect, global warming, trends in greenhouse gas concentrations and the enhancement of the greenhouse effect by anthropogenic emissions.

 There will be an opportunity for a Q&A with Dr Angove at the end of the talk.

2D stormwater modelling seminar

Time: 10am-noon

Location: Council's Administration Building, 126 Main Road Speers Point

Council is holding a seminar on the 2D stormwater modelling project that was undertaken by WMA Water for the suburbs of Pelican and Blacksmiths.

Join us to learn more about the following topics:
- What is 2D modelling?
- Lake flooding and catchment flooding explained
- What were some of the local stormwater issues explored in this project?
- What other ways can this tool be used, think Local Adaptation Planning
- What can Council be doing to record more useful information during the next flood event?
- Reality check; what are the limitations of this modelling approach?

Ongoing - Meetings of the Volunteer Community Planning Group

Following several meetings of the wider Pelican and Blacksmiths community, it was suggested by the community to form a smaller working group to collaboratively prepare a Local Adaptation Plan for the area with Council and present back to the wider community at key milestones along the way. As of February 2017 the meetings of the small working group, known as the Volunteer Community Planning Group (VCPG), are still underway.

Attend a Q&A session to learn about the effect of sea level rise on our coast, the Lake Macquarie Coastal Zone Management Plan adopted in 2015, the Lake Macquarie Waterway Flood Risk Management Study and Plan 2012 and how these relate to a Local Adaptation Plan for Pelican and Blacksmiths.

Residents and members of the Pelican Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group joined us on a tour on the morning of the February King Tide to see what sea level rise could look like, and to visualise future impacts so we can start preparing for the future.

Complete - Drop-in sessions

Council met with some residents of Pelican and Blacksmiths in late 2015 to listen and talk about opportunities for the community to help plan for the future of the area and prepare a Local Adaptation Plan.

Participants contributed more than 40 ideas about ideas for the future and current issues or observations. Council and the community will draw on this information again in community workshops scheduled for later this year. These comments have been uploaded to an interactive map.
