We’re looking ahead with purpose to make tomorrow better for our City, our environment and each other. We believe in shaping our future and planning for the housing needs of people who call Lake Mac home, now and in the future.
We are now progressing with implementing the Strategy to ensure a sustainable supply of diverse housing options into the future.
The five key focus areas of the Strategy include:
facilitating efficient and coordinated housing land supply and infrastructure
increasing diversity and choice in housing
facilitating infill opportunities for housing close to jobs and services
increasing affordable rental housing and home ownership
accommodating and guiding housing design and innovation and sustainability.
Council has now adopted discounts for social and affordable housing and has begun to implement planning changes including LEP and DCP changes to encourage infill development.

Housing Preference Survey Focus Group
Lake Mac Housing Strategy has finished this stage
Expressions of interest were invited from residents of Lake Macquarie to be part of a focus group looking at housing preferences. The focus group sessions have occurred and Council is now refining the housing preference survey for broader distribution to Lake Macquarie residents.

Council adopted the Lake Macquarie Housing Strategy on 14 April 2020.
Implementation of Housing Strategy

We have now begin implementing the actions of the Housing Strategy. Development Contribution Plan discounts for social and affordable housing have been implemented. Council has commenced a planning proposal and DCP amendment for planning changes to facilitiate more infill development. We will continue to consult with the community and the housing industry as we progress and implement changes to our planning controls.
