Why has Lake Macquarie City Council prepared a Parking Strategy?

Lake Macquarie City Council has developed a City-wide Parking Strategy to provide a long-term plan for the provision and management of parking and transportation across the City.

The Parking Strategy aims to provide a parking framework to assist in the decision making process for parking across the City.

The findings and recommendations arising from the Strategy will enable the City to better prepare, plan for, and manage parking issues. This may include individual parking management plans for each town centre or other areas identified as requiring detailed planning or management controls.

Does Lake Macquarie currently have a Parking Strategy?

Currently the City has not previously benefited from a formal City-wide Parking Strategy and has dealt with parking demand and supply issues on a case-by-case basis.

The City is currently experiencing increased population and business growth. This growth in new developments and ongoing residential in-fill will continue ti place increased pressure on car parking for businesses, visitors, residents and employees.

To plan for and manage parking within the City, it is important to prepare a Parking Strategy to set guidelines for the management of parking, and identify parking demand and supply.

How was the Parking Strategy developed?

The Council engaged a wide variety of stakeholders including residents, business owners, visitors, government agencies, workers, shoppers and commuters to learn more about our current and future parking needs.

Stakeholders were invited to identify issues and opportunities to improve parking in the City. The information collected was then collated and analysed. The Parking Strategy was developed based on the findings and recommendations arising from the community consultation and best practice. Council is now seeking feedback from the community and stakeholders on the recommendations of the Strategy.

The actions within the Parking Strategy are expected to commence implementation in 2017.

The information collected will also assist in the development of the City's Integrated Transport Strategy, which forms part of the Lifestyle 2050 Project.
