Lake Mac 2050 is a land use strategy that provides an adaptable approach to managing growth and development of the city so that it can grow and prosper into the future.

The strategy outlines top-line objectives and directions for Lake Macquarie City, identifying priority areas for change and investment.

Background

Using a variety of communication methods over the past two years, Council has been asking the community what it values about the City and how we could make it an ever better place, in the future.

We listened, and we have incorporated your shared ideas and priorities into the draft Lake Mac 2050 Strategy.

Lake Mac 2050 supersedes Lifestyle 2030. It has been written to reflect shifts in the community’s values and priorities. It also reflects changes in State planning policy, the Hunter Regional Plan 2036 and the draft Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan 2036, as well as anticipated social, economic and environmental trends.

The draft strategy is also based on the findings of relevant studies undertaken as part of this project.

Based on what residents told us they value most about the City, the strategy highlights seven directions to which we will steer our efforts:

  • Focus activity within and around our towns and centres
  • Develop well-connected, high-quality public spaces
  • Increase housing choice
  • Increase local jobs and investment
  • Provide more options to get around
  • Protect and enhance our lake, natural landscape and heritage
  • Ensure the city is resilient and responsive to change

The draft strategy also includes maps, marked with infill and growth investigation areas for varying types of development.
