Living safely with lead in North Lake Macquarie

This consultation has now closed. Thank you to everyone who made a submission or attended a drop-in session. The Project Team are now reviewing all submissions and will report back shortly.

The Pasminco smelter, near Boolaroo, operated for over a century. During this time airborne pollution resulted in soil contamination in surrounding areas by lead and other heavy metals. Since the smelter closed in 2003, some remediation work has occurred.

Late last year, the NSW Government adopted all 22 recommendations of the Lake Macquarie Lead Expert Working Group (LEWG) to manage legacy lead contamination issues associated with the former Pasminco lead zinc smelter.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (NSW EPA) has also allocated $800,000 over four years to help deliver some of the recommendations (1,2,13,18 and 19). About half of these funds will support a small grant fund for local residents, with the other half of the NSW EPA funds being used to progress remaining LEWG recommendations.

Council is seeking your input into:

1- determining the criteria for accessing the small grand funds, and

2- prioritising and refining the work you want Council to do to progress the LEWG recommendations funded by the NSW EPA.

To provide your feedback, come along to a drop in session at Boolaroo Public School or complete the below survey.

This consultation closes Tuesday 2 October.
