A Community Reference Group including professionals in architecture, design and hospitality will help Awaba House rise from the ashes as part of a Lake Macquarie City Council project to restore the historic site.

The group’s eight members met for the first time this week to discuss the building’s future following a fire which tore through the property last August.

Council’s Manager Property and Business Development David Antcliff said input from the wider community would also play a vital role in determining the path ahead.

“Everyone in the local community is encouraged to share their experiences and memories of Awaba House,” Mr Antcliff said.

“As part of the first phase of consultation, we want to hear what people would like to see the site used for in the future.”

“Along with the work being done by the Community Reference Group and relevant planning and heritage experts, the community’s feedback, ideas and stories will inform the development of draft options for the area.”

Mr Antcliff urged the community to visit shape.lakemac.com.au/revitalising-awaba-house by 29 February 2020 to share their stories and ideas.

“There will be further opportunities in coming months for the community to provide feedback on options as they are developed,” Mr Antcliff said.
