Plan set to soar Lake Macquarie’s potential as a visitor destination

The draft Destination Management Plan identifies the key strategies and actions to develop Lake Macquarie’s visitor economy and tourism marketing opportunities.

The Draft Plan is now on exhibition and Lake Macquarie City Council is asking community members and industry professionals for feedback to ensure the priorities and recommendations are on track.

Council’s Manager Cultural Services, Jacqui Hemsley, said once finalised, the Plan will assist Council to build and manage the visitor economy for Lake Macquarie.

“Tourism is an important part of our economy and will play an increasing role as Lake Macquarie continues to diversify and capitalise on the abundant opportunities presented in our City,” said Ms Hemsley.

“Our superb natural environment, growing number of cultural, sporting and adventure tourism attractions, and our proximity to the international gateway of Sydney are just some of the opportunities to be further explored in the actions of the draft Plan.

“The draft Plan identifies the possibilities of Lake Macquarie’s visitor economy and ways to package the unique qualities of the City and market them nationally and internationally.”

“We encourage residents and businesses to review the draft Plan and provide feedback during the exhibition period.”

Some of the opportunities to be explored include:

  • creating major events focused on the lake;
  • developing other large events, such as sporting and music events;
  • partnering with regional tourism teams;
  • activating the Lake with a touring boat, ferry service and on lake dining;
  • enhancing existing walking trails by introducing supporting commercial facilities, such as pop-up cafes; and
  • developing a dedicated tourism hub offering accommodation, event venues and visitor attractions and experiences within a town centre.
