Employment Land Use Strategy

About the project

The Lake Macquarie economy is undergoing a transition. Historically dominant industries like mining and manufacturing are in decline, with sectors including healthcare, social assistance, education and training, construction and renewable energy expected to grow in the coming decades.

Our draft Employment Land Use Strategy aims to support this transition. It establishes a clear framework to help maintain an ongoing supply of employment land across our city, that will help create local jobs and attract investment while balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.

The draft strategy identifies key priorities to guide Council's future planning, infrastructure coordination and land-use decisions around the supply of employment land.

You're invited to review the draft Employment Land Use Strategy and make a submission by 7 July 2026.

Our priorities

  • Ensuring a long-term supply pipeline of employment land
  • Creating a clear and consistent planning framework for employment land

  • Aligning existing and planned infrastructure with growth

  • Enabling the adaptive re-use of post-mining and energy land

  • Balancing the needs of a growing population with the need to enhance and protect the environment

  • Facilitating circular economy growth

For more information about the principles that underpin delivery of our priorities, see our plan on a page or check the draft strategy for more details.
